Michael Geddis

Born in 1960 in Belfast, Michael Geddis graduated from the University of Ulster’s Belfast School of Art with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2013. The methodical inquisitiveness that characterised his previous career as a veterinary surgeon for over 25 years is evident in his current artistic practice. Immediately after graduating, he was selected as a resident artist for Bangor’s Project24 and spent nearly a year in a seaside open studio. He concurrently benefitted from a membership award from Belfast Print Workshop and this enabled him to transfer his drawing skills to printmaking. Since then, he has been working on an Arts Council funded project to make very finely detailed drawings using micro-surgeons magnifying loupes.

To Geddis, there is immense beauty in complexity. His toil in producing obsessive amounts of details in his intuitive drawings of microcellular landscapes is a meditative activity. Biomorphic patterns are derived from memory and imagination. He delights in the elegance of nature’s complex forms and finds microscopic structures particularly inspirational. At first glance, his work appears to simply allude to conventional ecological and philosophical themes relating to nature like the fragility, beauty and sanctity of life. However, this familiar discourse merely camouflages a subversive attack on the mythical validity and sufficiency of the dogmatic “scientific gaze”.

Recent solo exhibitions include Pre-Graphaelite, Project24, Bangor [2014], Awesome Wonder, Georgian Gallery, Newtownards [2013] and Immersed in Exploris, NI Aquarium, Portaferry [2012]. Recent selected group exhibitions include Dwindling Abundance, Georgian Gallery, Newtownards [2015], RUA 133rd Annual Exhibition, Ulster Museum, Belfast [2014]; Graphite, Ulster Hall, Belfast [2014], BPW Members’ Show, Belfast Print Workshop, Belfast [2014], 2013 Draftsman Award Shortlist Show, Steambox, Dublin [2013], RDS Travelling Exhibition, Luan Gallery, Athlone [2013]; RDS Annual Students Awards, RDS, Dublin [2013] and Russian Dolls, Golden Thread, Belfast [2013].

Awards include Arts Council SIAP Funding [2014], Lord Dunleath Memorial Bursary [2014], National Award for Drawing at the RDS Annual Student Awards [2013], Belfast Print Workshop Bursary and Membership Award [2013] and Runner-up for Draftsman Award by Avenue Road Gallery Dublin [2013]. Geddis has been awarded 2015 residencies at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Cill Rialig and the Heinrich Böll Cottage. His work is included in the University of Ulster’s art collection.
